Jelly Roll and Bunnie XO have split after nearly 10 years of marriage.

The country star filed for divorce from his wife on May 18, according to TMZ, which was first to report the news. Sources told the publication that the decision to end the relationship was a mutual one.

Jelly Roll (whose real name is Jason DeFord) and Bunnie (aka Alyssa DeFord) married in August 2016, roughly a year after they met. They’ve had a rocky relationship, with Jelly Roll admitting to having an affair in 2018 that led to a temporary separation.

“We don’t have the stereotypical love story. And I never wanted the stereotypical love story,” Bunnie told Nightline’s Juju Chang in an interview earlier this year.

Before meeting Jelly Roll, Bunnie was an escort. And even after they got involved, she didn’t give up sex work right away. In fact, she was the breadwinner in the relationship before Jelly’s career took off.

“I fell in love with my husband because he treated me like no other man had. He never used my job against me, he never shamed me for it. He just loved me,” the Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic author said.

‘Dumb Blonde’ host saw sex work as a way to take back her ‘power’

Bunnie, 46, told Chang that she “grew up in survival mode” and left home at 14. Eventually, she fell into sex work.

“Growing up in Vegas, you don’t grow up and say, ‘I want to be a doctor’’ … the majority, back then especially, was ‘I want to be a showgirl.’ And when you can’t make it being a showgirl, what happens? You end up becoming a stripper,” she explained.

From there, it was an easy path to other forms of sex work.

“You get men that would come in the club and say, ‘Oh, I’ll give you X amount of dollars for 20 minutes,’” the Dumb Blonde podcast host said.

The money she could earn from escorting was far more than what she took home as a stripper. It wasn’t unusual for her to make more than $100,000 in a single evening.

“Definitely six figures [a night]. I had a few of those actually,” she said.

At the time, she rationalized her decision to work as an escort as a method of working through her traumatic past. Now, she realizes that there were flaws in that approach.

“I don’t recommend anyone ever trying to get into sex work to try to heal their trauma,” she said. “But I do think it was little me trying to take my power back.”
