Megan Thee Stallion’s Broadway debut has come to an earlier-than-expected close. The Grammy-winning rapper announced Monday that her final performance in Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be on May 1, much earlier than expected. The announcement sent fans into a frenzy and raised plenty of questions about exactly what led to the early curtain call.

Megan Thee Stallion’s role in ‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’

When Megan Thee Stallion was first announced as a limited-run cast member of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the world took notice. Megan’s role was historic. She became the first female-identifying performer to play Harold Zidler in any production of the show worldwide. The groundbreaking move made her eight-week engagement feel genuinely special, and it was.

While Megan Thee Stallion was never supposed to stay in the role long-term, her decision to cut her stay even shorter comes as a shock. She was originally scheduled to be in the lights through May 17, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Megan shared the news on Instagram. In the post, she expressed genuine gratitude for the experience. “Y’all work so hard, and I have so much respect for the dedication, the stamina, the work ethic, the time, and the effort y’all put into the work,” she wrote. While the announcement message was kind, empathetic, and well-thought-out, it has done little to soothe the sting for ticketholders who planned to see the musical specifically for Megan Thee Stallion’s appearance.

Megan’s announcement comes on the heels of her breakup

Megan’s time on Broadway was not without turbulence. She exited a performance mid-show in April, and her representative confirmed she was transported to a local hospital. She was treated for exhaustion and dehydration and discharged.

She later called the incident a “wake-up call” for pushing herself past her limits. While Megan Thee Stallion returned to the role pretty quickly after her hospitalization, it seems a lot was going on behind the scenes, too, and those issues appear to have led to her decision to step away.

Megan Thee Stallion Splits From Klay Thompson: The Reason is No Secret

The early exit announcement comes on the heels of her breakup with NBA player Klay Thompson. Rumors of trouble between the pair began days before the rapper confirmed the split. Fans noted that Megan looked emotional and downtrodden during her more recent appearances. She announced the split on April 26.

There has been much debate in recent days over who may have cheated on whom, and how long ago the pair actually split. No matter when it happened, though, the connection between the announcement and her early withdrawal from her Broadway commitment is pretty obvious. While she did not explicitly link the two events in her statements, the timing is hard to ignore.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical has not yet announced who will replace Megan as Harold Zidler. The musical is slated to run through the summer.
