Sydney Sweeney Torched Over ‘Disgusting’ Lingerie Ad Posing as Beloved Childhood Character
Sydney Sweeney appears to be boarding the holiday spirit train in her own element. The actress, who is no stranger to controversial ads, recently channeled children’s characters for her lingerie brand campaign. From the Home Alone kid to Cindy Lou Who, she dressed as different characters from classic Christmas movies. However, her latest move did not sit well with many who called it “disgusting.”
According to Page Six, the Syrn festive collection ad campaign begins with Sweeney eating a bowl of ice cream while watching television. She could be seen wearing a comfy off-white sweater with matching socks, just like Kevin McCallister in Home Alone. On the TV screen, she changes into a set of blue plaid pajamas with a furry cape, inspired by Who from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
The Euphoria star has another wardrobe change, and this time she dons a red plaid night suit. As she fixes a Christmas light, the campaign takes a drastic turn, showing Sweeney in different sets of holiday-inspired lingerie. The black set appears to be referencing Corpse Bride with a stitched smile drawn on Sweeney’s face and a white veil.
In another scene, she references White Christmas while wearing an icy blue set. The wardrobe changes in the campaign refer to Syrn’s different collections, including comfy, playful, and romantic.
The campaign appeared to irk many as viewers pointed out one disturbing detail. An Instagram user wrote, “Cindy Lou Who is a child character. Turning her into a lingerie costume isn’t edgy or cute; it’s s———- a little girl’s character, and that shouldn’t be normalized. This was a bad choice.” Another critic penned, “Are we forgetting that the character that inspired her is a child?”
“Is she actually turning Cindy Lou, the [purest] sweetest child, into a s– symbol!?!? Fire that creative director and get a brain, Sydney Sweeney,” a third user fumed. A fourth user wrote, “This woman is DISGUSTING.” Some fans spoke in favor of Sweeney, noting that she knows how to market her products.
The commercial marked the third controversial campaign in the past two months. Sweeney was previously criticized for her sports trading platform ad in which she left very little to the imagination. Promoting Novig, the Anyone But You star wore nothing but white briefs. When she dropped them, she hid her modesty with different sports equipment.
The ad received massive backlash, especially from women in sports. Many female Olympians called out Sweeney for s———- women’s sports after everything athletes have done to gain respect. According to Today, the platform addressed the controversy in a press release and defended the Sweeney-starring ad. They also announced that the actress is an equity holder and a strategic partner at Novig.
The release also included Sweeney’s statement, in which she called the ad a “fun idea.” She said, “The campaign was about embracing a fun idea,” before arguing, “The concept is simple: cut through the noise and put the focus entirely on sports. The campaign brings that idea to life with confidence, humor and a playful edge.”
A few weeks into the controversy, Sweeney clapped back at trolls with another clip from the shoot. However, she again received criticism for the “provocative” ad.
