Perez Hilton’s public mental health crisis earlier this month has led to a significant new development for his family. Hilton’s mother has now filed for temporary custody of his three children while he is being held on a Baker Act hold and recovering in a Miami hospital. The move comes just over a week after Hilton livestreamed a disturbing episode of self-harm on TikTok, an incident that led to his hospitalization and has kept him out of the public eye ever since.

Perez Hilton’s livestream led to his hospitalization

On August 4, things took a dark turn for celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. Hilton went live on TikTok and began acting erratically before appearing to harm himself on camera. Viewers watched in real time as he became covered in blood, prompting a flood of welfare calls to area police. Emergency service personnel rushed to his Miami home. They took him to the hospital, where he has remained in the days since.

Perez’s family later confirmed that his children, niece, and sister were actually inside the home just minutes before the incident, and fled once it became clear Hilton was in the midst of a severe crisis. Later reports indicated they wished to shield the several minors in the home from the mayhem. The family later shared a statement on his website, offering updates on his condition, noting that he was in serious but stable condition.

According to additional updates, Hilton experienced significant blood loss and sustained injuries that will require surgery. His recovery is expected to be a long process. The incident capped off a difficult year for the 48-year-old blogger, who had already been hospitalized earlier in 2025 for a perforated ulcer, sepsis, and a major blood clot.

Teresita Lavandeira, Perez Hilton’s mother, is looking to take custody of his children

While Hilton continues to recover in a Miami hospital, his mother is making moves to protect his kids and return some normalcy to their lives. According to TMZ, Hilton’s mother, Teresita Lavandeira, has filed for temporary custody of his three children. She is asking the court to seal the related records. In her filing, she reportedly said the children “should not be subjected to any further trauma.”

Sources close to the family told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack that the push isn’t about punishing Hilton. It’s all about giving the kids consistency while he focuses on getting well. His mother has been active in their lives since their birth, and is looking to become a stabilizing force for them. The unnamed source said, “She and his sister have practically raised them. Right now, everyone agrees the children need stability above all else.”

Who are his children?

While Perez Hilton’s life has mostly revolved around sharing celebrity gossip with the masses, he has a large and rich personal life. He is the father of three children, all born via surrogate as a single father. His eldest child, son Mario Armando Lavandeira III, was born in 2013. Hilton’s daughter Mia Alma was born in 2015. His youngest daughter, Mayte, joined the family a few years later. The kids are currently 13, 11, and 8, respectively.
