Prince William and Kate ‘Drop Choreography’ for a Moment With Unusual Move
Prince William took part in the annual DMMI Royal Charity Polo Cup at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park recently with his wife, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton), there to support him. It was the first time the princess attended the event since 2023, and all eyes were on them when Kate presented William’s team with the trophy.
Dr. Beth Dawson is a body language and behavioral expert with over 25 years of experience in the field. She noticed that the royal couple’s interactions at the July 10 event were much more “spontaneous” than usual.
Speaking on behalf of Cafe Casino, Dr. Dawson told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “One thing we know from relationship research is that shared humor can be a positive indicator of relationship quality, and it is difficult to fake. I’m not saying they laughed so the marriage is perfect, as that would be far too simplistic.
“However, they looked at each other rather than at the cameras. That is behavior you often see when two people have good rapport and complicity. It appeared to be a shared, spontaneous moment rather than something performed for photographers.”
The expert continued, “The kiss on the cheek looked natural, and walking away holding hands was notable because they rarely display affection at official engagements. However, the trophy moment was the most interesting because the choreography briefly disappeared. Kate reacted immediately, and William followed her into the moment.
“They were not checking how the interaction looked or directing their attention towards the cameras. They appeared to be sharing the joke with each other. Shared laughter does not allow us to diagnose the condition of somebody’s marriage, but it can show that two people remain responsive to one another and are emotionally engaged in the same moment.”
Dr. Lawson explained that this is different from what we usually see between the prince and princess because “red-carpet appearances are highly controlled. William and Kate are representing the Crown, so their movements, expressions, and interactions are naturally more restrained.
“A polo match is outdoors, more relaxed and less choreographed. Unexpected things happen, which creates opportunities for more instinctive reactions. In this case, the near mishap with the trophy produced a genuine moment between them. It did not prove that their marriage is perfect, but it showed a couple who appeared to understand each other and find the same situation funny.”
She added, “They have been married for 15 years, and they present like a long-married couple. They are often coordinated, task-focused, and behave as a team. Since Kate’s illness and recovery, their appearances have understandably focused on duty, family and teamwork rather than overt displays of affection. William has also appeared noticeably more protective of her.
“We should always be cautious about making definitive claims about a relationship based on selected public footage. However, spontaneous shared humor can offer a glimpse of rapport because it is much harder to consciously stage than a pose or formal gesture.”
