Selena Gomez Admits She Was ‘Not Remotely Mature Enough’ for Benny Blanco Just Five Years Ago
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco have been happily together since 2023. The couple tied the knot in 2025, though they met for the first time many years before this. Gomez said it is a good thing that they waited so long to get into a relationship. She doesn’t think that things would have worked out between them if they began dating earlier.

Gomez and Blanco met for the first time when she was 16 years old. Years later, they reconnected and began a romantic relationship. She is glad that things progressed in this way.
“I don’t think I would have been remotely mature enough,” she told Allure. “It’s weird to think that only five years ago I wouldn’t have been in the right place, but I’ve learned so many lessons [since then] that led me to being the best partner I could be for Benny. And I believe the same with him.”
She said that whenever Blanco expresses regret that they didn’t get together earlier, she tells him he should actually be happy.
“He’ll say, ‘Gosh, why did we waste so much time?’ And I always say, ‘You wouldn’t have liked me back then,’” she said. “I was all over the place.”
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco almost ended their relationship
Early in their relationship, Blanco said he wanted to take things slow because of Gomez’s towering level of fame.
“I definitely tried to keep it private for a while, because it’s a lot,” he told Rolling Stone. “I remember us having a conversation about whether we were going to keep dating or not. We just had to make sure, because she’s as big as it gets and it’s a big undertaking. It’s not like you date someone for a few weeks and then you’re like, ‘Oh, OK, bye.’ So we just took it slow.”
Even though he said he felt they were a good match, it wasn’t easy to deal with the attention on them.
“Then it started becoming such a hard thing, because it was like, ‘I don’t want to just have dinner inside with you and have all of our dates inside and we’re wearing a mask the entire date, and then we have to go hide in a car.’”
Ultimately, he decided that the relationship was worth it.
He shared what he wanted in a partner
Before he got together with Gomez, Blanco said he created a list of what he wanted in an ideal partner.
“I said, ‘I really wanna find the right partner, and I’m doing something wrong. I can’t find the person that I’m gonna spend the rest of my life with, and I want to do that,’” he said on The Mel Robbins Podcast. “And we came up with some guidelines and a list.”
He said the first thing on his list was someone age-appropriate. He also wanted someone kind and generally happy.
“And if they were sad, they were doing something about it,” he added. “Like they were going to therapy, they were taking medicine if they need to, they were doing yoga. They were actively trying to [change things].”
He said that if someone didn’t meet five or six items on the list, he didn’t want to pursue the relationship. Clearly, Gomez checked the right boxes.
