Employee Seemed ‘Superbly Underwhelmed’ by Kelly Clarkson in Shop Clash, Said Body Language Expert
The feud between Kelly Clarkson and a Brooklyn shop continues to boil. In a social media post, Clarkson claimed that she attempted to buy a bird automaton, but the employee denied her. Clarkson likened the experience to the film Pretty Woman. The store has denied any wrongdoing. Now that video footage of the interaction has surfaced, a body language expert weighed in on the tense exchange.
Kelly Clarkson clashed with a Brooklyn shop over a denied purchase
In a recent social media post, Clarkson said she attempted to purchase a bird automaton called Molly. According to her, the employee did not seem to believe she could afford it.
“Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me,” she wrote. “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale.”
“But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman,” she continued. “For sure, check it out.”
Art of Play later responded to say that the bird is a permanent installation and was not for sale.
“We explained that while Molly is permanently attached to the wall and serves as a de facto mascot for our shop, a nearly identical automaton is owned by the creator of the machines, a brilliant artist named Bliss Kolb who lives in Seattle,” the statement read. “He told us he would be willing to part with Molly’s twin for $15,000. We explained all of this to Kelly Clarkson.”
Clarkson later posted a picture of a $15,000 price tag on Molly, seemingly demonstrating that the item was for sale. The feud has continued to play out online.
A body language expert weighed in on the interaction between Kelly Clarkson and the shop worker
In video footage, Clarkson walks around the store and begins to collect items. Body language expert Inbaal Honigman with Casino.org believes that this should have signified her ability to afford things.
“Clarkson is making an effort to send out the message that she can definitely afford to buy stuff,” she explained. “With her hands full, she walks around, making sure that everyone can see that here walks a lady who can buy things.”
Honigman noted that the employee did not seem impressed by Clarkson’s wealth or fame.
“The store worker walks up to Clarkson with his hot beverage still in his hand,” she said. “When he stops by her, he sends his other hand backwards to support him as he leans upon on the back of a chair, and to top it all off, he crosses his legs at the ankles. If Clarkson had expected the star treatment, she must be sorely disappointed. The staff member’s body language is superbly underwhelmed, nonchalant to the point of indifference.”
She believes that the way he carried himself suggested “a casual confidence, even disengagement.” It’s possible, she said, that he does not recognize her.
She said Clarkson seemed baffled by the interaction
As the conversation between Clarkson and the employee went on, Honigman said that it was clear the singer didn’t like what she was hearing. She also seemed shocked by the interaction.
“When Clarkson looks back at the wall, she breaks eye contact, which is a way of blocking out the conversation. This suggests disbelief: how could she possibly be denied something she wanted?” Honigman said. “She’s no longer engaged. She points at the item again, indicating that she wants it, but the discussion is soon over.”
She then put her other items back on the shelf before leaving.
