Movie Review

'The Protégé' is a solid action vehicle. This thankfully simple hitman story is best when stars Maggie Q and Michael Keaton share screen time. There are some thrilling action sequences, too.

'The Night House' is emotionally intelligent, sufficiently unnerving, and thoroughly eerie. It will be playing exclusively in theaters beginning on Aug. 20.

Hugh Jackman stars in 'Reminiscence' as Nick Bannister, the proprietor of The Tank. The Tank allows Nick to play clients' memories back for them, but he becomes obsessed with his own memories when a woman (Rebecca Ferguson) he loved disappears.

Regretfully, we have to give the Aretha Franklin biopic 'Respect' a negative review. While there is plenty of attention given to Jennifer Hudson paying homage to Franklin's music, the film lacks the power of Franklin's significant life moments. Even some of the musical performances are at odds with the lackluster filmmaking.

Ryan Reynolds is hilarious in 'Free Guy' but there's a lot more to his new movie than jokes. The love letter to video games makes fun of gaming's most frustrating elements, and promotes a positive message about making games, and the world, nicer.

James Gunn brings a new take to 'The Suicide Squad' and it certainly is unique. Gunn brings back some characters and adds a whole lot more, but as entertaining as his anarchy is, it sometimes feels like there's nothing to root for.

'Jungle Cruise' is a fun Disney action movie. As a Dwayne Johnson vehicle it plays to his strengths. Emily Blunt actually gets the most fun action. Like many blockbusters, 'Jungle Cruise' goes overboard in the end but it's mostly a good time.

M. Night Shyamalan adapted and directed 'Old' and it's among his best work. That's a high bar considering 'The Sixth Sense,' 'Unbreakable' and 'The Visit' but 'Old' delivers on chills, jumps and poignant tragedy.

Kate Beckinsale returns to action in 'Jolt'. She plays a volatile woman using electric shocks to keep herself calm. Beckinsale is endearing when she tries to keep herself calm, and explosive when she allows herself to fight back.

'Joe Bell' tells the story of Jadin Bell (Reid Miller), who died by suicide in 2013, and his father, Joe (Mark Wahlberg). Joe went on a walking tour to speak about bullying, but the movie about him doesn't seem to have intentions as pure as the grieving father.

'Broken Diamonds' starring Ben Platt and Lola Kirke demonstrates how strong a family's love can be.

'Space Jam: A New Legacy' is bigger than the 1996 Michael Jordan movie in the worst ways. It's longer and stuffed with enough Warner Bros. IP to overwhelm LeBron James, but none of it is funny.

'Escape Room: Tournament of Champions' picks up where the first one left off. By crafting another thrilling series of intense deadly challenges, this sequel proves this franchise can go on indefinitely.
