On Tuesday, the owner of SugarHi Bakery in Boca Raton, Florida, took to social media to share a story about her encounter with the former Bravo star.

“I have debated telling this story for so long. I have a story about Bethenny Frankel,” Hillary Assael said in the the reel posted on Instagram. “…This is not a whiny, poor me story. But last year, after we opened SugarHi in Boca. Bethenny’s assistant reached out asking us to make a huge custom cake for her birthday party in Miami.”

The baker got the impression that The Big Shot With Bethenny star did not want to pay for the cake.

“I took a gamble as a business owner [and] said it was an honor, which it was,” she shared. She only asked that the RHONY alum tag the business in any posts. But they replied that there were “no guarantees” that Bethenny would tag the business.

“This was a big deal cake … We spent, give or take, $4,000, including the cost of the cake. And we drove four hours round trip to deliver it,” Assael continued. “The next day, Bethenny posted the cake everywhere — stories, reels, carousels, posts. Daily Mail picked it up. Food God posted it. She tagged the venue, photographer, the glam team, the videographer, everybody except us. Eventually we got tagged in like slide 5 of the carousel. Honestly, we got no business from it, no followers.”

“The part that bothered me the most was not losing the money. It was the lack of acknowledgement. Not even a ‘thank you,’” she said.

Assael’s story of being taken advantage of by an influencer hit a chord with commenters. Many were sympathetic. One said she’d had a similar experience.

“Bingo! [Bethenny] did It to me too! Woman supporting woman yeah yeah,” commented Stacey Assael Skordas, who makes bags from vintages recycled materials.

“That was taking advantage big-time! She can afford that cake,” another person wrote.

A few people pointed out that Assael made a mistake by not getting a guarantee from Bethenny that she’d promote the bakery in her posts.

“This is simple: If you expect a tag, put it in writing,” commented Ubah Hassan from The Real Housewives of New York City. ‘Business runs on agreements, not assumptions.”

Bethenny’s feud with Dina Manzo’s daughter over gifted shoes

Assael isn’t the only person who’s recently called out Frankel for snubbing small businesses. Over the weekend, she got into an social media spat with Alexia “Lexi” Ioannou, the daughter of Dina Manzo. Alexia had given Bethenny a pair of shoes from her fashion brand, Nou. Bethenny wore the shoes in an outfit video she shared on her socials. But instead of tagging Nou, she shared a link to purchase a similar-looking pair of shoes from a different retailer.

“She got the shoes for free from a woman-founded brand, mine, and then she made money sending her followers somewhere else,” Alexia complained in an Instagram post.

Bethenny fired back in a TikTok video.

“I have stated multiple times, you send me something I have no obligation to link, like, use, wear, buy, tag. I can do whatever I want,” she said.

“Playing the short game and whining and being a crybaby about something that didn’t go your way in business means you’re not a real business person and you have a lot to learn,” the SkinnyGirl founder added.

Alexia was among those commenting on SugarHi’s post about the costly cake.

“This is exactly why I shared my experience. so small businesses have a voice. we all work too damn hard to not be credited,” she wrote.

“Yes! I have thought about sharing this for so long….,” Assael replied. “You gave me the courage!”
