It’s a swift renewal for Carrie, which premiered October 7 and quickly hit no. 1 on Prime Video in 105 countries, according to the streamer. The show is an modern-day reimagining of King’s chilling tale, which was previously adapted into a 1976 movie directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek. The new version stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her mother, Margaret White.

In King’s novel and De Palma’s Oscar-nominated film, Carrie’s story culminates in a bloody, violent rampage after she is targeted in a cruel, prom-night prank. After a final confrontation with her controlling, religious fanatic mother, Carrie dies.

Flanagan’s take on the story changes the ending. Carrie’s first season ended on cliffhanger following the title character’s prom night breakdown. The finale introduces several other women with telekinetic powers, one of whom is actually the person responsible for Margaret’s death. Meanwhile, Carrie and her friend Emaline, who also has telekinetic powers and the ability to astral project into Carrie’s body, drives away, with Emaline revealing that they are going somewhere safe.

Stephen King ‘can’t wait’ for audiences to see what happens next in ‘Carrie’

Carrie Season 2 will feature “new revelations [that] will come to light, major character arcs, and plenty of shocking twists,” Prime Video promises.

Both King – who is an executive producer on the show – and Flanagan said they are eager to take Carrie’s story in new and unexpected directions. The Haunting of Hill House creator has previously said he envisions Carrie having three seasons.

“For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” said Flanagan.

“I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White,” King said. “Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

All episodes of Carrie Season 1 are streaming on Prime Video.
