Daveigh Chase, an actor best known for her work in The Ring and Lilo & Stitch, died at the age of 35 this week. The tragedy of her passing and her turbulent adult life have reignited debate over child stars and the support they don’t seem to get as they transition into adulthood. Chase’s death has also led to the resurfacing of a deeply disturbing video clip featuring Sean “Diddy” Combs inviting a then-12-year-old Chase to a party. Here’s what happened.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs asked Daveigh Chase if she was attending an after-party when she was just a preteen

Following news of Daveigh Chase’s death, which hit the mainstream media, online sleuths resurfaced a short video clip that, in the context of what has been learned about Sean “Diddy” Combs in recent years, is deeply disturbing. The footage shows Diddy sauntering up to Chase backstage at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards. In it, Diddy asks the 12-year-old Chase if she’s attending the afterparty. She nods yes, to which Diddy responds positively.

Standing feet from the pair is Ashton Kutcher, who, along with Diddy, presented Chase with the “Best Villain” award for her work on The Ring. It is unclear if Chase attended the “after party” Diddy spoke of, or who was chaperoning the preteen at the iconic awards ceremony. Chase went on to appear in many more projects after The Ring.

The former child star’s final years and tragic death

Daveigh Chase died in a Los Angeles hospital on June 17 after a battle with meningitis and a systemic infection. The 35-year-old former child star had largely stepped away from the spotlight in recent years, with her last role coming in 2016. In the intervening years, Chase reportedly battled addiction following a 2016 motorcycle accident and had become largely estranged from her family.

In the days since her death, a man claiming to be her partner stepped forward, asking for donations to a GoFundMe campaign. Chase’s family has denounced the campaign, urging people not to donate, as they have the means and the desire to cover Chase’s final arrangements. In a statement to The Daily Mail, Chase’s mother said she learned of her daughter’s death via online sources and had not spoken to her since 2019. Her father was notified as the next of kin. Chase’s manager and a stepsister were actively searching for Chase in the homeless encampments around Los Angeles at the time of her death.

No public information about funeral arrangements has been released. No public tribute is planned at this time.
