Kendra Caldwell and Joseph Duggar Withdraw ‘Not Guilty’ Pleas
Joseph Duggar and his wife, Kendra Caldwell, have made a surprise move in their child endangerment cases. The couple has withdrawn the not guilty pleas they entered earlier this year. According to reports circulating on August 10, the same day the couple was scheduled to appear in Elm Springs District Court, the withdrawal is a surprising move from the duo, one of whom is facing much more serious charges out of state. Though the details of what the withdrawal means going forward have not yet been made public, we do have some information.
Why were Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell arrested?
To understand what the withdrawn plea could really mean, we need to go back to the start of the case. The duo’s case dates back to March 2026. That month, Joseph and Kendra were both arrested and charged with four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. They wer also charged with four counts of second-degree false imprisonment. Kendra was arrested just days after her husband was picked up on unrelated charges. Their four young children were removed from their home following the arrests. In late April, an attorney representing the couple entered not guilty pleas on their behalf ahead of a scheduled arraignment. They did not appear at that hearing, but both were formally scheduled to appear in court on August 10.
In the months between their initial pleas and this week’s court date, Kendra made headway in reconnecting with her kids. She successfully petitioned to have a no-contact order tied to the case dissolved in April. Her legal team argued at the time that the alleged victims wanted contact with her restored and that the restriction was preventing important third-party evaluations connected to the case. Court filings also indicated the Arkansas Department of Human Services would help facilitate reunification between Kendra and the alleged victims in the case. While the victims have not been named, they are assumed to be her four minor children. Joseph asked for modifications to his order. They requjest was denied.
Withdrawing a not guilty plea can signal several possible next steps in a criminal case, ranging from a change of plea to guilty or no contest, to a negotiated plea agreement with prosecutors. The reports, on the morning of the actual court hearing, suggest a plea agreement may have been reached.
Joseph Duggar’s other, more serious charges
The Arkansas child endangerment case was serious enough for the state to remove four children from Kendra and Joseph’s care, but it isn’t the only legal matter the family is facing. Joseph is facing much more serious charges in Florida. He is charged in Bay County, Florida, with one count of lewd and lascivious behavior involving molestation of a victim under 12, and one count of lewd and lascivious behavior by a person 18 or older.
The charges stem from allegations made by a young girl who says Joseph inappropriately touched her multiple times during a 2020 family vacation to Panama City Beach. She was 9 when the alleged abuse occurred. According to an arrest affidavit, Joseph admitted to the conduct when confronted. He was promptly arrested and extradited to Florida.
Joseph has pleaded not guilty to the Florida charges and requested a jury trial. He was released on a $600,000 bond and is currently free, with restrictions, until the trial. If convicted, Joseph could spend years behind bars, much like his older brother, Josh Duggar.
Despite her own legal woes, which, while technically separate from her husband’s, may have stemmed from them, Kendra has stood by her husband while he faces much more serious charges out of state. Sources close to the family have described her as supporting Joseph and the broader Duggar family. She is reportedly estranged from her parents and siblings because of it.
