Kim Kardashian’s New Book Is Causing More Drama Within Her Family; ‘You’ve Just Given Our Rights to Our Lives Away’
A new season of The Kardashians is underway, and as fans know, it wouldn’t be a show about the famous family without a bit of drama.
As seen in a teaser for the latest episode, tensions are building over Kim Kardashian‘s new book. Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future is an authorized biography of the SKIMS founder written by journalist Jonathan Van Meter.
The book traces Kim’s life from her Beverly Hills childhood and early days working as a stylist and assistant for her pal, Paris Hilton, to her rise as a reality TV star, billionaire businesswoman, and criminal justice reform advocate. A significant portion of the book examines the wider Kardashian-Jenner family, including the influence of her father, Robert Kardashian, as well as her mother, Kris Jenner’s earlier relationships, and the dynamics of growing up in the public eye.
In addition, Citizen Kim covers several talked-about stories and traumatic experiences, such as her teenage marriage to Damon Thomas, her marriage and divorce from Kanye West, being robbed at gunpoint in Paris, and how she’s navigated intense media scrutiny. Van Meter also explores how Kim fundamentally reshaped modern celebrity culture and the social media and reality television landscape.
During the Nov. 12 episode on Hulu, Kim begins discussing her biography, saying, “The one thing I find so interesting in the book …” Before she can finish, she’s interrupted by her older sister, Kourtney Kardashian, asking, “What book?”
“For the last six years, this guy has been interviewing everyone in our family,” Kim said. Her momager, Kris Jenner, then gets visibly upset and responds, “Somebody else to analyze us. Perfect. You have just given our rights to our lives away to some stranger. I gotta go,” before storming off.
When speaking about the book to The Hollywood Reporter, Van Meter said that he was told Kim had “been at Khloé [Kardashian]’s house, where Khloé told her Kris had flipped out on camera while they were filming the show” and was yelling, “Why did Kim drag us all into this? Why is my affair from 30 years ago in the book?”
The author was asked if anything in the tell-all book upset Kim and explained, “The number one thing was the way I wrote about her father. She kept saying, ‘There’s just a tone.’ And when I looked again, I thought, ‘You know what? She’s right.’ It was a little snarky. He’s been dead for so long that he had stopped feeling like a real person to me. To her, he’s still alive in her mind.
“She also thought the sex tape material went on too long, and the Damon Thomas material made her squirm. But she read a couple of other chapters and cried because they were so true to her experience as a 13-year-old. She said it made her give that little girl some grace. In the end, she accepted the material she had objected to. I cut two sentences for her because they concerned her safety.”
