The Keeping Up With the Kardashians crew had a front-row seat to the breakdown of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s marriage.

While filming the Kardashian family’s E! reality series, cameras captured tense interactions between the rapper and his in-laws. But those scenes never made it to air, a producer reveals in author Jonathan Van Meter’s new book, Citizen Kim: The Woman Who Created the Future.

In October 2020, Kim and her extended family gathered together to celebrate Caitlyn Jenner’s birthday. It was supposed to be a way for the family to “come back together and be supportive” after a difficult period, former KUWTK executive producer Farnaz Farjam, said in an excerpt of Citizen Kim published by The Cut. But Kanye quickly made the event about himself and his failed presidential campaign.

“Kanye came to Caitlyn’s house with Kim and he just started ripping into Kris and the family and questioning them about not voting for him,” Farjam recalled. “He just made it all about himself. That whole 30-minute battle was very telling, but we had to edit it out.”

West’s tirade came as his relationship with Kim and her family had come under serious strain. A few months earlier, he had accused his wife and his mother-in-law of trying to “lock me up.”

Not long after the incident at Caitlyn’s party, Kim filed for divorce. By the time the final season of KUWTK aired in 2021, the relationship was over.

Kim Kardashian said she didn’t want ‘someone talking bad about my kids’ grandmothers and aunts’

While viewers did not get to see West lashing out at Kim and her family, the aftermath was shown, with Kim breaking down about her marriage to her sisters.

“I just honestly can’t do this anymore,” she said. “I feel like a f*cking failure and it’s, like, a third f*cking marriage. … Yeah, I feel like a f*cking loser.”

Kim hasn’t commented directly on the incident at Caitlyn’s party. But during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast in 2025, she said that Kanye’s comments about her family were an issue in her relationship with West.

“There was just a lot of things that I wouldn’t deal with,” she said when host Alex Cooper asked her what the “final straw” was in her marriage. “I didn’t like the feeling of someone talking bad about my kids’ grandmothers and aunts… If someone feels that way, then, you know, we shouldn’t be together … just not feeling safe.”
