In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, Douglas, 82, confesses to having a relationship with his co-star while he was separated from his then-wife, Diandra Douglas. (Douglas says he checked with Turner before sharing the story.)

“Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature. I instantly liked her, and we were immediately attracted to each other,” he writes (via People).

“The chemistry I had with Kathleen Turner was so strong, audiences have been certain for years that we were in a relationship together while making the film,” he added. Audience were correct about the affair, but he and Turner repeatedly “denied” sleeping together while promoting Romancing the Stone, its sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, and other projects, including Netflix sitcom The Kominsky Method, where they played a former husband and wife.

While the relationship didn’t last long, according to Douglas, he and Turner had a genuine connection.

“It wasn’t a fly-by night affair; it grew naturally from how closely we were working together, how much pressure we were under, how much we respected and cared for one another, and how attracted we were to each other,” he says in his book. However, things ended when his wife arrived for a set visit with their son. Douglas felt guilty and Turner did not want to interfere in his marriage, so they called it quits, though they remained friendly.

Why the ‘Romancing the Stone’ stars were so compatible

Douglas and Turner’s affair makes perfect sense once you realize they have highly compatible astrological signs. He’s Libra Sun (born September 25), while she is a Gemini Sun (born June 19). As two Air signs, they share a natural connection built on mental stimulation, strong communication, and mutual charm.

A couple with these two signs tends to enjoy easy, lively conversation and strong sexual compatibility. They also respect each other’s freedom – one reason that they were able to end  their on apparently amicable terms. Both Geminis and Libras are strong, clear communicators, which probably also helped when it was time for them to go their separate ways, and when they crossed paths again as colleagues.

In his memoir, Douglas recalls reuniting with Turner to work on the script for The Jewel of the Nile.

“And as we sat across from each other, rebuilding the movie, it felt a little like we were also repairing things between us, finally getting over everything that had come before,” he writes. “Trading pages back and forth, negotiating over lines, laughing at scenes and picturing our characters going at each other in every way imaginable… It felt good knowing we were back on solid ground.”
