A best-selling science fantasy series that started as a self-published novel is coming to Peacock.
Matt Dinniman confirms ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ TV series is coming to Peacock
On Friday, author Matt Dinniman announced on social media that a Dungeon Crawler Carl adaptation was in the works at the streamer.
“Surprise! I’m happy to announce that our friends at Peacock have *officially* greenlit the Dungeon Crawler Carl television series!” Dinniman wrote on Instagram. “Me, Chris Yost and Seth MacFarlane and his team at Fuzzy Door are all really excited to get to work. In the coming weeks I’ll have more details, and if you’re going to [San Diego Comic-Con] be sure to catch me and Chris on our DCC panel. In the meantime I wanted to thank you, the fans, for helping make this happen.”
“Surprise, bitches! It’s official,” read the text on a graphic announcing the show. “The apocalypse will be televised.”
In 2020, Dinniman began publishing his story about a man who is among the few survivors of an alien takeover of Earth. He, along with his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, are forced to compete in a multi-level dungeon crawl game that is televised across the universe. (Dungeon Crawler Carl is part of the LitRPG subgenre, which blends traditional storytelling with elements drawn from role-playing and video games.)
Dinniman first shared the ongoing story on the digital platform Royal Road and eventually began self-publishing the series on Amazon. In 2024, Ace, an imprint of Penguin Random House, gave the books a traditional release. As of early 2026, they’d sold more than 6 million copies. The eighth book in the series, A Parade of Horribles, was released in May.
Fans are ready for ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’ adaptation
Dungeon Crawler Carl will be produced by MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door and Universal Global Television. Dinniman will serve as a co-executive producer. It will be a live-action adaptation, Deadline reports.
Loyal fans of the series were thrilled to learn of the adaptation, though some were disappointed the series would not be animated.
“Princess Donut is ready for her close up,” one person commented on Instagram.
“PEACOCK PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO THIS SERIES JUSTICE OR I SWEAR TO GOD,” another implored.
“I have never been more excited for a show,” someone else wrote. “This is so cool. I hope you get a lot of say in what they do. Congratulations!”
