Prince Harry’s Anger-Driven Lawsuits Have Cost Him Millions Over the Years

Prince Harry’s quest for justice has cost him millions in legal bills and other costs over the years. That’s put increasing pressure on his marriage to Meghan Markle, some insiders say, as the couple continued to struggle to find a way forward financially after having left the royal family.

In the past decade, the Duke of Sussex has waged high-profile battles against multiple British tabloids. He’s filed lawsuits against the publishers of The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, The Sun and News of the World, and The Daily Mirror. He won his case against the Mirror and settled a claim against Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun and News of the World out of court. But earlier this summer, he suffered a legal blow when his case against The Daily Mail was tossed out by a judge.

Harry’s animus toward the tabloid press stems from the treatment of his mother, Princess Diana. She died in 1997 while her driver was trying to evade paparazzi in Paris. 

“His campaign against the other newspaper groups has largely been successful,” media lawyer Mark Stephens told Reuters of Harry’s recent defeat in court. “But I think it’s time to reappraise what the media today is and it’s very different to the media of [the time of] Princess Diana.”

Harry and other claimants alleged that The Daily Mail had published stories based on illegally obtained information. But a judge said that there was not enough concrete proof that paper’s journalists had used illegal methods of gathering information, such as hacking voicemails. 

Associated Newspapers, the parent of The Daily Mail, said it would seek legal costs for a trial that cost it $45.8 million. The case involved multiple litigants – including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley – so Harry won’t be on the hook for the whole amount. Still, he could be responsible for forking over a substantial amount of money, perhaps as much as $20 million, royal expert Mark Dolan told Express. It’s a bill the prince should have seen coming, he said. In 2024, he paid $1.5 million after withdrawing a different suit against The Daily Mail. 

“So, if it’s conservatively $10 million, let’s be nice, let’s be charitable, then that’s all of the Spare money gone in on fell swoop. Has he got the cash? What does Meghan think of this? And where does he go from here? This is an existential crisis for Harry,” Dolan said.

I think what’s happened, guys, is that he sued in anger,” Dolan added. “You should never never sue someone when you’re angry. You have got to have cool heads, calm, rational arguments, and it’s always a risk. Instead, he’s gone in like a bull in a china shop.”

Now, Harry and Meghan could be facing a serious financial hit that could jeopardize their lavish lifestyle.

“Some people close to the situation fear this is the start of a financial downward spiral,” a palace source told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack. “No one is saying they’re broke tomorrow, but blockbuster paydays have slowed while the legal bills keep coming. That math eventually catches up with you.”

Lawyers says The Daily Mail is going for ‘the jugular’

Per Reuters, Harry and his co-litigants do have an insurance policy that would cover £16 million, or roughly $21.6 million, of what they owe Associated. What the final bill will be remains to be seen, as both parties are still hashing out the issue in court. But lawyers for Harry and the others say Associated’s massive legal costs are wildly out of line, The Guardian reported. 

At the level of insurance coverage, that Harry and the others have, they “would reasonably expect to be insured for the total of Associated’s incurred costs and approved estimated costs,” Nicholas Bacon said. 

“They accept they have lost and costs should follow the event.” Bacon added. However, Associated is trying to make a point and  “go for the jugular” when it comes to recouping their costs in the case.
