Taylor Swift Used Subtle Jewelry Choices to Tell a ‘Personal Story’ at Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Ceremony, Expert Says
Taylor Swift tells stories through her songs, and through her fashion choices, an expert says.
On June 11, “The Fate of Ophelia” singer was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. At 36, the Grammy winner is the youngest woman to receive the honor. (Stevie Wonder remains the youngest inductee ever – he’s been in the hall of fame since he was 32.)
Taylor Swift says songwriting was ‘instinctual’
The focus on Thursday was Swift’s chart-topping music, and her jewelry – including her yellow-gold citrine diamond drop earrings – was a reflection of her sharp creative instincts.
“As a jeweller, what instantly jumped out at me was her choice of Imperial Citrine Diamond Drops,” said Nilesh Rakholia, founder of online jewelry retailer Abelini. “In the trade, we know citrine as a stone of warmth, clarity, and pure creative energy. It carries this beautiful sense of optimism and forward momentum, which fits a career milestone like this perfectly.”
Swift’s induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame comes two decades after she released her first album, Taylor Swift, at age 16. In her emotional speech at the ceremony, Swift thanked her parents and younger brother for uprooting their lives so she could pursue her musical dreams in Nashville. She also said that songwriting was the part of her career that was “easiest” for her to master.
“[I]t was instinctual,” Swift said. “No one taught me how to do it. I had to be taught how to entertain the crowd and learn choreography, and be less annoying, and navigate the industry, and fiercely protect my own sanity. I had to learn all of that over time through difficult lessons, and massive amounts of trial and error, and chaos, and calamity.”
“The songwriting, for me, is pretty much the only thing I ever just naturally did,” she added.
‘Karma’ singer’s jewelry was an ‘incredibly smart choice for public speaking’
While Swift’s words were the focus during Thursday’s ceremony, her earrings helped carry her 20-minute speech, Rakholia said.
“Yellow-toned stones like Imperial Citrine perform beautifully on camera,” he explained. “They have this gorgeous, honeyed refractive quality that bounces a soft, warm glow right back onto the skin. When you’re standing at a podium delivering an acceptance speech, that kind of light play is everything; it keeps the focus entirely on the face.”
“The architecture of the earrings is just as deliberate,” he continued. “Drop earrings are an incredibly smart choice for public speaking. Because they catch the light with every slight nod or turn of the head, they draw the viewer’s eye upward toward her expressions. That’s exactly where the emotional impact of the night lives.”
Rakholia also praised Swift for not following a tried-and-true path with her jewelry choices.
“It’s easy to just default to standard white diamonds for a major red carpet, but choosing citrine shows real individuality. It signals personality and intention over convention,” he said.
“We’re seeing a beautiful shift right now toward jewellery that tells a personal story rather than just flaunting status,” Rakholia added. “This look feels like a celebration of transition, where her professional legacy and personal evolution meet.”
