There’s a Royal Wedding Happening This Weekend, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Weren’t Invited
Snubbed again!
The royal family is getting ready to celebrate another wedding this weekend, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won’t be in attendance. That’s in spite of Harry’s once-close ties with the groom.
Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips to say ‘I do’ this weekend
Peter Phillips – the son of Harry’s aunt, Princess Anne – will tie the knot on Saturday with nurse Harriet Sperling. Not only will Harry and Meghan not attend the event, they weren’t even included on the guest list, according to reports. (Also not invited? The former Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, who have been shunned by the rest of the royal family due to their various scandals.)
“Peter and Harry haven’t spoken for several years and have simply lost touch, so he hasn’t been invited,” a friend of the couple told Hello! However, other sources claim that Peter has acted as a “buffer” between Harry and his estranged brother Prince William and that navigating the tension between the two has been difficult for him, leading to the difficult choice to not include one brother in the celebration.
Peter was formerly married to Autumn Kelly. Harry did attend that couple’s 2008 wedding at Windsor Chapel. But much has changed in the intervening years, most notably Harry’s own wedding to Meghan (which Peter attended) and his move to the U.S. With Peter and Harriet reportedly planning an “intimate occasion” with “close friends and immediate family,” it’s not terribly surprising that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were left off the guest list. It’s not clear if Prince William and Kate Middleton will attend Peter and Harriet’s wedding.
Peter Phillips had close relationship with his royal cousins when they were kids
Despite the current distance between him and Harry, Peter was close to his royal cousins growing up, he’s said. In a 2016 interview with Good Morning Britain, he talked about being raised among the royal family.
“I guess it’s a little strange, but if you’re growing up with that sort of thing, there’s never a moment when you go, ‘oh wow,” he said, adding that he had fond memories of spending time with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and the rest of the family at Sandringham, Balmoral, and Windsor.
“We had a lot of fun and there was a lot of space for kids to run around, and it wasn’t just us – it was the Wales’s (William and Harry),” he added, as well as the children of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and the kids of Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
“So there was quite a gang of us growing up in that age and it was a lot of fun,” he continued. “We caused quite a bit of mayhem and chaos but, fortunately, I don’t think we broke too much!”
