‘This Is Poly’ Throuple’s Family Issues ‘Harsh’ Verdict on Their Controversial Lifestyle: ‘A Disgrace’ [Exclusive Clip]
Love comes in all shapes and sizes. But can be there be too much of a good thing? Not according to people who’ve embraced polyamory.
We TV’s new series This Is Poly explores the lives lives of five different polycules, who are all taking their own approach to this subset of consensual non-monogamy, where people have multiple romantic relationships with the informed consent of all partners. Yet even as more people look beyond traditional monogamy, not everyone gives polyamory the thumbs-up, as some of the show’s stars discover.
‘This Is Poly’ stars’ family call their lifestyle ‘a disgrace’
Kami and Trent have opened up their marriage to include Nita, and they’re eager to formalize their throuple with a commitment ceremony. However, Kami and Trent come from a strict religious background, and when they share the news of their lifestyle with their loved ones, it doesn’t go well.
“It’s been a little bit of time since we’ve come out as a throuple,” Kami says in a an exclusive clip from the This Is Poly series premiere. “And we’re starting to get some feedback.”
“We did get a pretty harsh response from your sister-in-law,” she tells Trent. “She basically said, ‘This has gotten so out of control. This stuff is such a disgrace to the family. I will be blocking you.’”
Others just don’t want to know what Kami and Trent get up to into the bedroom: “Do what you want behind closed doors, but you don’t have to put it all over the internet,” one person commented.
“Dang. That’s tough,” Trent responds.
Nita is wondering is she pressured Kami and Trent into making a choice that they’ll later regret.
“There is a lot of responsibility,” she tells a producer. “I did make this happen … I wanted it and went after it and was persistent. And here we are. There’s some guilt, definitely, attached to that.”
Kami feels that her family has ‘erased’ her
While Trent’s family is making their objections to polyamory known, Kami’s family has simply shut her out.
“The hardest part for me is the silence,” she tells Trent. “I have not heard from my family since [we told them]. It’s almost like I disappeared. Like they erased me. That hurts more than somebody lashing out. At least lashing out is a response.”
For his part, Trent is wrestling with the feeling that he’s let his father down.
“I’ve always been looked up so highly [to] from my dad,” he says. “To actually feel like I’m doing anything that’s dishonoring, that’s hard … the tough thing for me is just being a disappointment at this time in my life.”
“My father, I actually kind of prepped him privately,” he adds. “And it didn’t go over well.”
This Is Poly premieres Friday, May 29 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, immediately following the season premiere of Love After Lockup at 8pm ET/PT. Episodes stream the next day on All Reality.
