After he took the field with the Kansas City Chiefs in a game against the Miami Dolphins, Travis Kelce got people talking about more than just his play and had fans divided over something that had nothing to do with football.

The star tight end turned heads before leaving South Beach on Sept. 27, with a bold postgame outfit. After helping the his team defeat the Dolphins 24-10 at Hard Rock Stadium, Kelce was photographed wearing a colorful teal-and-purple Nike tie-dye hoodie and matching sweatshorts. He completed the look with white Nike Air Force 1 sneakers, Nike ankle socks, and a black designer duffle bag

“Feels more like a brand play,” one fan opined, while another, shocked by the ensemble, chimed in, “For real?”

“He needs a new stylist,” a third person wrote, and a fourth commented, “Patrick [Mahomes] looking at him like ‘Travis really?’”

Others defended the look, saying, “He likes fun clothing and bold patterns. Plus it looks comfortable for the plane ride home. He wore a sport coat on arrival. Just wants to sleep on the trip home,” and “I love whatever he wears. And good for him for bringing something that would be relaxing for the ride home after playing in extremely hot temperatures.”

Kelce has been a big fan of fashion long before he met his wife and starred in a Tommy Hilfiger campaign, and like the outfit or not, it’s very on trend.

According to search trend data analyzed by Free Spirited Clothing for the throwback print, U.S. Google searches for “tie-dye” reached approximately 3.4 million in a single monthly period earlier this year. And interest doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. The latest month analyzed recorded around 1 million U.S. searches, up 20% compared with the same period last year.

Abby Rafer, spokesperson for Free Spirited Clothing, explained that the tie-dye appeal is less about a single comeback and more about how people keep finding different ways to wear it. A tie-dye hoodie can work with plain jeans rather than matching shorts. A colorful T-shirt can sit under an open overshirt or denim jacket. The print becomes the focal point without every piece competing for attention.

“Tie-dye never completely disappears, but it changes with each generation,” she said.

Rafer also points to nostalgia as only part of the attraction, adding that different colors, patterns, and individually hand-dyed pieces offer ways to make the look feel personal, rather than simply recreating an outfit from another decade.

Alongside the search analysis, Free Spirited Clothing examined 12 months of its apparel sales to determine which tie-dye colors customers actually chose. Rainbow/multi came first, accounting for 22.51% of purchases, followed by blue at 16.90% and green at 15.76%. Blue and Green represented almost one in three classified purchases, showing there is plenty of room for palettes beyond the full rainbow. Rainbow/Multi ranked first in 43 of the 46 states with sales data. Maine preferred blue, while Montana and West Virginia favored green.
