Though people are watching the World Cup to see their favorite teams compete, they are also taking inspiration from the players’ hairstyles. New analysis shows that global searches for “World Cup hair” have jumped significantly in the past month. A beauty expert shared the styles that will dominate trends this summer.

According to analysis by the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform, Fresha, searches for “World Cup hair” have jumped by 226% in the past month. The style that has seen the biggest increase in searches over the past three months is soft twists. Searches for this style, which Fresha notes will stay put in the summer heat, have jumped by 81%.

The bleached buzzcut has seen a 50% increase in searches. This look has been a favorite amongst soccer players for years.

In third place is the clean taper, which has seen a 30% increase in interest. English player Jude Bellingham has made the look so popular that people have begun to refer to it as the “Bellingham Taper.”

Other looks that the World Cup has popularized include man buns, the textured French crop, and the buzzcut.

A beauty expert spoke about these World Cup hairstyles

The World Cup is a global celebration, and many people want to emulate their favorite players.

“The World Cup is such a big event that emotions run high: everyone’s proud and looking like their favorite player taps into that,” said Annabelle Taura, a beauty expert at Fresha. “That’s why we’re seeing searches climb for popular hairstyles worn by top players, including twists, buzz cuts, and skin fades.”

She noted that this often happens with professional athletes.

“We’ve seen this before with [David] Beckham’s iconic looks, with his Mohawk or curtain blond hair, and it shows no sign of slowing down.”

She also said that players and fans alike can use their hair to show their pride in their countries.

“Hair is also becoming a way for fans to wear their country’s colors,” she said. “Just as USMNT player Weston McKennie has tinted part of his hair red, white and blue this tournament, we’re expecting fans to do the same, with temporary colour, tipped ends or braided patterns in their team’s shades.”
