Zendaya recently rocked a pixie cut at the Emmy Awards. The new style was incredibly flattering on the actress, but it has the potential to go wrong. A stylist shared how to get the cut and how to make sure it looks just as good.

Zendaya recently debuted a pixie cut

At this year’s Emmy Awards, Zendaya showed off her new pixie cut. She stunned with the look and potentially kicked off a new fall trend. But anyone looking to emulate her haircut should know: it takes work.

“The pixie cut has to be my favourite look due to its bold look and personalisation options,” Fresha partner and salon owner Max Nicholson said. “However, face shape, natural texture, and home care must be taken seriously by your stylist, or this could be the biggest flop, like trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions…”

He noted that his clients make “common mistakes” when they go for this style. Here’s how to avoid them.

“Skipping regular trims is the single biggest mistake,” he said. “A pixie cut is defined by its shape and precision. Unlike longer hair, where a few weeks of growth can be disguised, a pixie cut loses its structure and starts to look messy or heavy very quickly.”

Nicholson recommends appointments every four to six weeks to maintain a stylish cut.

“A pixie cut is not one-size-fits-all. What looks great on one person might not suit another. The mistake is bringing in a picture of a celebrity and expecting a replica without considering your own features and hair texture. I would advise you to work with your stylist to customize the cut. A good stylist will tailor the length, layers, and fringe to complement your face shape and work with your natural hair texture, not against it. For instance, fine hair needs texture for volume, while thick hair needs careful thinning to avoid a helmet-like appearance.”

Nicholson also noted that less is more when it comes to styling products.

“Many people treat their new short hair like their old long hair, either by over-styling with heat or drowning it in product. A pixie cut is meant to look effortless, and heavy products will weigh it down, making it look greasy and flat,” he said. “One of my favourite sayings is — Less is more. Switch to lightweight products like texturising sprays, waxes, or pomades. Use a pea-sized amount and warm it between your hands before applying. The goal is definition and movement, not stiffness. This will help you achieve that sexy finish we all need and want!”
