The 2022 Golden Globes are coming up fast. And while fans are eager to catch up with the nominated movies, it’s also the perfect time to look back at the history of the Golden Globes themselves. After all, the awards themselves have been around since 1944. But during all that time, which individual movie has won the most awards? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

The Golden Globes has a long Hollywood history

Soon after the formation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in 1943, the organization introduced the Golden Globes. The idea was to recognize achievements in American and international film and television alike. And despite the HFPA’s membership of only 87 members, the Golden Globes have remained well-known by industry insiders and even casual fans.

In many cases, the awards ceremony is considered something of an indicator of which movies and stars will get Academy Awards attention. After all, they tend to occur around the same time as the Oscar nominations are announced. And while the cross-over between voting members for each is slim to none, the Globes do put a spotlight on particular projects.

A recent movie boasts the all-time record for most wins

Even though the Golden Globes have been around for so long, the movie that won the most awards actually hit theaters just a few years ago. 1975’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and 1978’s Midnight Express each earned six awards from the HFPA. However, they were narrowly beaten out by writer-director Damien Chazelle’s 2016 musical La La Land starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, which won seven awards.

According to the Golden Globes official website, the film — which went on to earn six Oscars — won not only Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy and Best Director. Both Stone and Gosling won for their performances. And La La Land took home trophies for Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “City of Stars.” Effectively, the film won every single Globe for which it was nominated.

Which film has the most nominations for 2022?

In the 2022 Golden Globes, two movies have a chance to match La La Land‘s record. Both Belfast and The Power of the Dog are nominated for seven awards. If either sweeps all their categories, they will effectively tie that 2016 musical. That scenario might be unlikely given the intense races at play, but it’s notable nonetheless.

The 2022 awards race has been a wild one. In addition to Belfast and The Power of the Dog, such heavy-hitters as King Richard, Licorice Pizza, and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story are vying for wins. Fans will know the outcome soon enough, however, as the Golden Globes will go down on January 9, 2022.
