Alex Cooper and her husband, Matt Kaplan, are making headlines after they attended YouTube’s TV Upfront in New York City together.

That’s because the Call Her Daddy podcast host and film producer’s appearance came during a turbulent period for the married couple. The pair, who tied the knot in 2024 after building a fast-growing media empire together, recently faced mounting rumors about strain and turmoil regarding their relationship and business ventures.

In the weeks leading up to the event, there have been reports of tension within the couple’s company, Trending, which oversees Cooper’s Unwell Network. Some of the allegations include workplace complaints tied to Kaplan’s management style, with accusations that he yelled at employees and created a stressful production environment during filming for Unwell projects. Other reports fueled speculation about problems in their marriage itself, citing claims that the couple had been spending time apart and dealing with personal conflict.

Despite the controversy, Cooper and Kaplan presented a united front at the high-profile advertiser showcase. Photographers captured them smiling together, holding hands, and posing on the red carpet before entering the presentation. But a body language expert pointed out one telling sign in the photos of them that shows all is not well behind the scenes.

She has appeared in the media for more than 20 years, and she has offered her expertise and perspectives on current events and popular culture for several outlets, including Big Brother’s Little Brother, Elle Magazine, and talkSPORT radio, to name a few.

According to Honigman, Cooper and Kaplan did not make any eye contact when they posed for the cameras, which reveals two things.

Speaking on behalf of Casino.ca, she told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “An important insight is that they’re not really that close in friendship or in love. This is a business arrangement. If they were fond of each other, they might share a glance to check in on one another, but Kaplan and Cooper appear not to care that much about one another. The lack of eye contact could suggest some antipathy, as if they had quarrelled on the way there and then slapped their smiles on for the press.

“The fact that they don’t need to communicate at all, not even by looking, while they pose with matching physical and facial expressions, indicates that their goals are aligned, that they both know what they need from those photos, and that they’re the consummate professionals, stepping onto that red carpet and serving face in tandem, no words needed. They can sense each other’s posing techniques and strategies and respond intuitively to one another, as they know each other so well.”

Honigman added, “Kaplan places himself instinctively behind Cooper, sending the unmistakable message that she’s front and center in the relationship. Furthermore, his hiding behind her shows that she’ll defend him if any allegations or accusations arise. She’s shielding him physically, and she’ll shield him publicity-wise. It shows Cooper as the dominant decision maker in their relationship.”
