Kody Brown’s Capricorn Qualities Help Explain His Decision to Quit ‘Sister Wives’
Kody Brown has left the building.
Last month, Sister Wives fans were stunned when TLC dropped a trailer for the show’s 21st season, and Kody and his wife Robyn Brown were nowhere to be seen.
Neither Kody nor Robyn have commented on what’s behind their exit from the show after more than 15 years. But the move isn’t so surprising when you consider Kody’s controlling Capricorn qualities.
Capricorns like Kody Brown can be stubborn and critical
Kody, 57, was born on January 17, making him a Capricorn. Capricorn is an Earth sign ruled by Saturn. It’s represented by the mythical sea goat. At their best, people with this sign can be driven, ambitious, and practical. But when they give in to their worst qualities, they can be stubborn, unemotional, overly critical, and rigid. (Sound familiar?)
Sister Wives viewers can likely think of countless times when the Brown family patriarch displayed his sign’s less-positive traits. As the Brown family fractured, Kody became increasingly intent on maintaining control, even if it meant jeopardizing his relationship with those closest to him. His strict isolation rules during the COVID-19 pandemic put him at odds with some of his kids, and his demand that the entire family relocate from Las Vegas to Flagstaff, despite the objections of three of his four wives, was the beginning of the end for the polygamist clan. After Christine Brown became the first of his wives to leave him, Kody tried to hold things together by demanding his remaining three wives “conform to patriarchy.”
But Kody’s attempts to remain as the Brown family’s ultimate authority failed. Eventually, both Meri Brown and Janelle Brown left him as well, leaving Robyn as the only remaining wife. With his exes building their own lives without him, Kody could no longer dictate the Brown family’s larger public image. That loss of control can be a problem for Capricorns, who can have trouble accepting that not everyone wants the same things that they do and are often unwilling to admit when they are wrong. Fans will recall that rather than work on fixing his relationship, he played the victim, as when he described Christine’s decision to leave as a “knife to the kidney.”
‘Sister Wives’ star left the show when it was no longer serving him
Eventually, Kody realized that his behavior was doing him no favors. In Sister Wives Season 20, Kody went on an apology tour, where he sat down with his three ex-wives and attempted to clear the air. But it seems that the apology tour was less about saying he was sorry and more about making himself look better in the eyes of viewers.
“I feel like the apology tour was, in the end, something he was trying to redeem himself with, and I don’t think it was necessarily that sincere because there’s been no contact since,” Janelle said in the season 21 premiere, which aired October 4.
Capricorns aren’t necessarily attention-seekers. But they do want to be respected. If they are forced into a position where they have to give up power (as Kody was on Sister Wives) they can lash out. And if they feel that they’re no longer getting something out of a situation, these pragmatists may cut ties entirely. Once Kody decided that appearing on Sister Wives was no longer serving him, he probably didn’t have much hesitation when it came to stepping out of the spotlight.
People with this sign can also be fiercely loyal and protective to those who are in their inner circle. Time and again, Kody has made it clear that Robyn is the most important person in his life. Walking away from Sister Wives allows him not only to shield himself from criticism, but also to protect her from the spotlight. By giving up reality TV and retreating into his private life, Kody can maintain the control he so desperately wants.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on TLC. Episodes stream on HBO Max.
