Doja Cat has dealt with criticism that she’s not a real rapper since her mainstream breakout just a few years ago. One of those people who denied her status as an emcee was New York hip-hop icon Remy Ma.

Remy Ma said Doja Cat isn’t a rapper

Remy Ma let her thoughts about Doja Cat be known in a March 2022 interview on Drink Champs. The “Shether” rapper told N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN that while she was a fan of Doja Cat, she wasn’t sure if she would qualify the “Say So” hitmaker as a rapper.

“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” she said plainly. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”

Doja has faced this issue in the past before. In May 2021, she earned a nomination for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards, which sparked outcry as many questioned her status as a rapper, instead claiming her to be a pop star. She’s insisted that she’s a rapper with a tried-and-true hip-hop background, and that she wanted to be respected as such.

Doja Cat’s thoughts on comments that she’s not a rapper

Doja Cat stood her ground in June 2021 in an interview with radio host Big Boy.

“I don’t find myself ever really getting caught up in the whole ‘I’m not a rapper, or I am a pop artist’ type thing,” she said honestly. “That doesn’t bother me because every song that I put out — maybe a few off [Planet Her] don’t have it — but almost every song I rap on, and I’m giving them 16s, or 8s.”

“I’m a rapper!” she affirmed. “It doesn’t matter! And I don’t care what anybody says, you know what I mean? I know who I am.”

Doja Cat almost quit music

Despite having hit albums including Planet Her and Hot Pink under her belt, Doja has often struggled with being the spotlight as a public figure. In March 2022, she was in Paraguay for a performance when she was stuck in her hotel due to a deadly thunderstorm, and fans were upset that she didn’t spend time greeting them.

Doja stated that she was quitting music, but eventually returned with a clearer head.

“I can travel, I can eat good food, I can see new people, I can smile, I can make memories that I dreamed of having, I can laugh, I can support my family and my friends, I can learn about the world, and I can give back to everyone because of you,” she said humbly in a tweet. “I do owe people s***. I owe a lot.”

“I owe myself a lot too,” she continued in another tweet. “I owe myself the chance to open up and be good to people. I owe myself the death of my fears that don’t allow me to expand my heart. I didn’t come to another country to do something i can do everywhere else. that would be pointless in a way.
