Is ‘Dexter: New Blood’ Setting Up a Harrison Spinoff?

'Dexter: New Blood' invites viewers back into the life of Dexter Morgan, the serial killer who hunted other serial killers before faking his death and going into hiding in the original series finale. But it spends much of its time focusing on his son -- which raises questions about whether it's actually a Harrison spinoff.

Dexter Morgan, the serial killer-murdering serial killer, is back for what could be the final chapter of his story in Dexter: New Blood. Set nearly a decade after the events in the Dexter series finale, the show finds him hiding out in a small town in Upstate New York. He’s lived a quiet life for the last few years, but his world is quickly upended by the return of Harrison Morgan, the child he left behind in that widely hated finale

The series, released on Nov. 7, spends much of its time focusing on his son, leading some viewers to believe that Dexter: New Blood might subtly be setting up a Harrison spinoff. Here’s why they think so and what they think the show could be about.

‘Dexter: New Blood’ brings Dexter and Harrison back together

Dexter: New Blood has dedicated much of its attention to Harrison ever since the first episode. After finding a letter indicating Dexter was alive, Harrison started looking for him. He tracked Dexter from Florida to Oregon to Iron Lake, where Dexter has been living as Jim Lindsay, a firearms dealer. He initially resents Dexter for abandoning him but ultimately decides to stay in Iron Lake.

Dexter is relieved that Harrison appears normal. But by Dexter: New Blood Episode 4, he’s realizing the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and that Harrison also has darkness within him. He seemingly developed violent tendencies after witnessing his mother’s murder, just like Dexter.

Is ‘Dexter: New Blood’ a Harrison spinoff?

Michael C. Hall is the star of Dexter: New Blood, but Jack Alcott has been taking up a lot of screen time too as his son. It’s that amount of attention, coupled with the title, that has many fans wondering if the show is actually about to launch a full spinoff about Harrison

“I think Harrison is being groomed for a spinoff,” said one Reddit comment. “The first 4 episodes have been showing him as competent, intelligent, charismatic, funny … the things you want from a series lead. Give him the same writers, his own internal narration, and his own dark passenger (Trinity?) and you got a great series for a new generation.”

“could totally see it,” read another. “Harrison is fantastic, really really good young actor who pulls off the angry teenager without being cheesy or lame”

“I was thinking this also,” read a third comment.

To note, Showtime hasn’t said given any indication that New Blood is a Harrison spinoff. Network president Gary Levine actually considers it “a proper finale,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. And that, to us, sounds like the story might conclude here.

Five episodes are left until the finale

Fans will surely be sad to see the show go, but at least there are more episodes ahead. The show is building to a finale that showrunner Clyde Phillips says will shock the Internet.

“The ending of this one will be stunning, shocking, surprising, unexpected,” he said on a panel during Comic-Con 2021. “And without jinxing anything, I will say that the ending of this new season that we’re doing will blow up the internet.”
