‘This Is Us’ Season 6 is new tonight, April 5

This Is Us fans will finally begin to understand what happened between Kate, Toby, Jack, and a Big Green Egg smoker when episode 11 of the final season airs tonight, April 5.

The synopsis for This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11, “Saturday in the Park,” reads, “Rebecca and Miguel’s anniversary barbecue does not go as planned.”

The preview for tonight’s This Is Us hour reveals that Jack goes missing when the Pearsons gather at Kate and Toby’s house for the party. Before that happens, though, Jack tells Rebecca that his mom and dad fight a lot. And Kate confides in Randall about her and Toby’s marital problems. She tearfully says, “Every day I wake up, and I think, ‘Today’s the day that Toby and I aren’t going to fight.'” He reassures her, “You guys are going to make it through this.”

What happened in the previous episodes?

Kate and Toby’s breakup has been building up for a while now, even before tonight’s episode of This Is Us.

Ever since Toby took the San Francisco job, their relationship has suffered. And it’s not just because they are spending multiple days a week apart. Rather, the distance between Kate and Toby has shined a light on problems already there. The truth of the matter is that they are sadly growing apart. And This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9 highlighted how Kate and Toby could reach the point of no return.

The ninth episode, the Kate-centric hour of the Big Three trilogy, featured Kate visiting Toby in San Francisco. The couple spent some quality time together, but the fun didn’t last long. Toby overwhelmed Kate by showing her a house that he wanted to buy. And then she discovered that Toby had turned down a job in Los Angeles.

Kate and Toby then had a vicious fight where they aired out all of their grievances. Kate revealed that she missed the old Toby, and he stood firm in his belief that they needed to move to San Francisco. At the end of the hour, Kate called Phillip to let him know that she wanted to apply for another position at the school.

Also, Toby informed Kate that the Big Green Egg smoker had arrived in time for Rebecca and Miguel’s party. Thanks to a flash-forward in episode 3 with Jack and Lucy, fans know that an accident involving the smoker leaves a scar on Jack’s forehead. And the day of the incident is the day that Kate and Toby’s marriage ultimately falls apart. So tonight’s This Is Us episode is going to be a doozy.

The This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11 preview briefly shows Toby tending to meat on the Big Green Egg smoker while holding Jack. So fans know that danger lies ahead for Kate, Toby, and Jack.

Per Entertainment Weekly, executive producer K.J. Steinberg, who wrote “Saturday in the Park,” teased the upcoming episode.

“A lot of the episode is — and this is something we’ve never done before — from the point of view of Jack Jr., an unsighted child,” Steinberg shared. “A lot of it is experiencing the conflict and the dissolution of his parent’s marriage through his little ears, and through his milky, hazy eyes. Often when there’s tension in that household, the child gets forgotten.”

She added, “[Fans] should be very concerned [for Kate and Toby]. They are walking a tight rope right now.” And when asked to describe the episode in four words, Steinberg said, “Terrifying. Heartbreaking. Heartening. Funny.”

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11, “Saturday in the Park,” airs tonight, April 5, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
